Boston is one of the coolest US cities. Boasting exciting nightlife, historic sights to sea and stunning views over the harbour, Boston really has it all. The clam chowder is the dish of the city, and rightly so. It is a simple recipe of fresh shellfish in a creamy soup with potatoes and pork and a handful of delicious herbs. Nothing quite beats this rich concoction. Don’t be fooled if you’ve already tried clam chowder elsewhere in America, this dish changes drastically from region to region! Already tried it and want to recreate it yourself? Check out a recipe here.

Now we know it’s not the most sustainable way to eat, but it is worth trying! Texas is famous for its barbecue cook-outs, with a huge variety of meat slow cooked in smoky flavours and served with delicious sides like charred corn on the cob. It has become a real culture point for Texas, sparking huge events and festivals dedicated to the barbecue. It’s hard to beat the melt-in-your-mouth slow cooked brisket, we’re slightly obsessed! Take a look at the Texas Monthly Barbecue Festival here.
Chicago is one of the most exciting cities you’ll visit. We know pizza is everywhere and obviously originated in Italy, however, the Chicago pizza is something quite different. The thick crust is gently fried in oil giving it a delicious flavour and texture, and then layered on top (in what we’d consider a slightly odd order) is cheese, vegetables or meat and then a fresh tomato sauce. It is truly addictive, and definitely worth a trip to Chicago for! Read all about the history of deep dish pizza here.
The Philly cheesesteak is famous around the world, and we can understand why! This staple dish is beautifully simple, a perfectly cooked piece of steak, layered with gooey cheese in a crusty baguette. Often a foot long, finishing one of these can be challenging, but worth a go! There are plenty of options to load up the sandwich as much as you like, with people opting for sweet caramelised onions and sauteed mushrooms. This will be the best sandwich you’ll ever taste! Check out a recipe here if you want to try and recreate it!
On our Coyote Trips we always make sure everyone gets the opportunity to try a Philly cheesesteak in Philadelphia!
Fresh fish tacos in California are up there with our favourite meals. Seasoned with Mexican spices, the delicate fish is brought to life and sandwiched between a corn taco. It’s the perfect snack when exploring busy LA! Often topped with shredded cabbage and a guacamole-style sauce, the flavours are punchy and memorable. We know there are plenty of exciting dishes to try in California, but be sure to make a fish taco one of them. Have a look at the best places to try them here.
We’ve been focusing on the savoury, but America does sweet just as good! In particular the Mississippi mud pie is to die for. Made up of a chocolate cookie crust and then all of your favourite chocolate desserts rolled into one for the topping, this is what dreams are made of. It is intensely rich and creamy, and mostly made with a chocolate fudge layer, a ganache, marshmallows and chocolate frosting. However, this ranges from restaurant to restaurant and sometimes it can even be topped with custard and whipped cream… Truly mouth-watering! Check out a recipe here.
